Creature types
The ten types a creature can be, what can be tamed or skinned, and which spells only work on one of them.

The ten types
Every creature in the game is exactly one of these, and the type is not decoration: it decides what can be cast at the thing, whether a hunter can tame it and whether it can be skinned. Counts are creatures that actually spawn somewhere in the world — 531 of them tameable and 816 skinnable.
| Type | Kinds | Spawns | Levels | Tame | Skin | Most common |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BeastTameable by hunters, skinnable by anyone, and the only type a druid can Hibernate. | 876 | 19,871 | 1–63 | 531 | 588 | Sunscale Screecher 169 spawns |
| DragonkinHibernate works here too, which surprises people. Skinnable. | 132 | 1,316 | 1–63 | — | 106 | Corrupted Red Whelp 200 spawns |
| DemonBanish and Enslave Demon, and the paladin's Exorcism hits them. | 137 | 1,968 | 2–63 | — | 23 | Cursed Darkhound 156 spawns |
| ElementalBanishable, never skinnable, and immune to more schools than anything else. | 210 | 2,101 | 1–63 | — | — | Whip Lasher 126 spawns |
| GiantNo type-specific control at all — nothing in the game is cast only at giants. | 33 | 242 | 25–63 | — | — | Cliff Breaker 53 spawns |
| UndeadShackle Undead, Turn Undead, Exorcism. The best-answered type in the game. | 400 | 4,018 | 1–63 | — | 2 | Plagued Ghoul 150 spawns |
| HumanoidThe biggest type by far: Polymorph, Sap and Mind Control all need it. | 5,242 | 28,243 | 1–63 | — | 50 | Anvilrage Reservist 244 spawns |
| CritterOne health, no threat. Polymorph works, which is a joke the game left in. | 61 | 3,595 | 1–45 | — | 12 | Rabbit 456 spawns |
| MechanicalNothing controls them and nothing skins them. Engineering targets. | 57 | 242 | 1–50 | — | — | Harvest Watcher 35 spawns |
| Not specifiedTriggers, totems and scenery — things with a creature row that are not creatures you fight. | 282 | 4,638 | 1–63 | — | 35 | Scourge Invasion Minion, finder 1,129 spawns |
Spells that only work on one type
15 of the abilities this site holds refuse every target but a named type or two. The list is read from each spell's own target mask, so it covers the ones nobody remembers as well as Polymorph: the paladin's Exorcism and Holy Wrath are damage spells that simply will not fire at anything living, which makes a paladin a specialist in two of the ten types and an ordinary damage dealer in the other eight.
| Spell | Class | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Hibernate | druid | Beast, Dragonkin |
| Soothe Animal | druid | Beast |
| Beast Lore | hunter | Beast |
| Eyes of the Beast | hunter | Beast |
| Scare Beast | hunter | Beast |
| Polymorph | mage | Beast, Humanoid, Critter |
| Exorcism | paladin | Demon, Undead |
| Holy Wrath | paladin | Demon, Undead |
| Turn Undead | paladin | Undead |
| Mind Control | priest | Humanoid |
| Mind Soothe | priest | Humanoid |
| Shackle Undead | priest | Undead |
| Sap | rogue | Humanoid |
| Banish | warlock | Demon, Elemental |
| Enslave Demon | warlock | Demon |
What a hunter can tame
531 of the 876 beasts in the world carry a pet family, and the family is what a hunter is really choosing — it decides the pet's abilities, not the model. Only beasts can be tamed: a few demons carry a family too, and those are the warlock's own minions.
