What is the WoW Classic Icon Quiz?

The Icon Quiz is a free World of Warcraft knowledge game built for players who want to sharpen their eye for WoW Classic items without opening the client. Every question shows you a single in-game icon — the same 36x36 pixel artwork you see in your bags, your profession windows, and the auction house — and asks you to identify the item behind it from four multiple-choice answers. There's no timer pressure and no penalty for guessing wrong beyond breaking your streak, so it's equally useful as a relaxed way to pass a few minutes or as a focused training tool before a big farming session.

Unlike a static flashcard deck, the Icon Quiz pulls its questions live from our full WoW Classic items database, which covers herbs, ores, cloth, leather, potions, elixirs, and dozens of other crafting reagents used across every profession in the game. That means the pool of possible questions is large, constantly reshuffled, and grounded in real item data rather than a fixed quiz script — you won't see the exact same ten icons in the exact same order twice.

Why train your item icon recognition?

WoW Classic asks a lot of your visual memory. Herbalists have to tell Kingsblood apart from Liferoot at a glance while riding past a node. Miners need to recognize Truesilver Ore in a crowded bag before they vendor it by mistake. Alchemists juggle dozens of near-identical vial-shaped potion icons, and tailors have to distinguish bolts of cloth that differ by only a shade of color. None of that comes from reading tooltips — it comes from repetition, and the Icon Quiz is designed to give you that repetition in a format that's faster and more focused than farming in the open world.

Playing a few rounds before you go farming, craft a big batch of consumables, or clean out a cluttered bag pays off in small but real ways: fewer misclicks when vendoring reagents, faster sorting when you're deciding what to keep for the auction house, and less time spent hovering over icons to read tooltips you should already recognize on sight. For newer WoW Classic players especially, the Icon Quiz compresses weeks of incidental in-game exposure into a few short, focused sessions.

How a round of the Icon Quiz works

Every question follows the same simple loop. First, we pick an item from the pool and show you its icon, enlarged and centered on the screen, with no name or tooltip text attached. Below it, four possible item names are laid out as buttons — one correct, three plausible distractors pulled from the same random sample. You click the name you think matches the icon. If you're right, the button flashes green, your score ticks up, and your current streak counter increases. If you're wrong, the correct answer is highlighted in green so you can learn from the miss, the option you picked flashes red, and your streak resets to zero. Either way, the game automatically advances to the next question after a short pause, so there's no need to click "next" — you just keep answering.

In Round Mode, this repeats for a fixed set of 10 questions, and once you've answered the last one you land on a results screen showing your final score, a quick verdict on your performance, and — if you're signed in — a link to your profile to see how much profession XP you picked up along the way. It's the format to reach for when you want a quick, bounded session with a clear finish line, like a two-minute warmup before you sit down to actually play WoW Classic.

Endless Mode strips away that fixed length. Instead of stopping after 10 questions, the game keeps generating new ones in the background as you answer, so you can play for as long as you're enjoying it — five questions or five hundred. The header swaps the progress bar for a running question counter and your current streak, and an "End" button sits in the corner so you can stop whenever you like and see your final score plus your best streak of the session. Endless Mode is the better choice if you're the type of player who wants to chase a personal best streak, or if you just want a background game to half-focus on while doing something else.

Earning profession XP and tracking known items

Sign in with Google and the Icon Quiz becomes more than a one-off distraction — it starts feeding into a persistent profession knowledge profile. Whenever you land a correct answer as part of a streak of three or more, you earn bonus XP toward whichever WoW Classic profession that item belongs to. That XP accumulates using the same tiered skill-level system the game itself uses for professions: Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Artisan, and finally Master, each with its own color and XP threshold. Your profile page shows a progress bar for every profession you've touched, so you can see at a glance which ones you've actually put practice time into and which ones still need attention.

There's a second layer underneath the XP system: per-item mastery. Every time you answer a specific item's icon correctly, we track that as part of a streak for that exact item. Answer the same item correctly five times in a row — across any number of sessions, it doesn't have to happen all at once — and it's marked "known" on your profile, filed under the profession it belongs to. From that point on, known items are deliberately shown less often in future rounds, roughly a third as frequently as items you haven't mastered yet. The practical effect is that the quiz naturally steers itself toward whatever you're still weak on instead of wasting your time re-testing icons you've already nailed down, and your profile slowly fills up with a visible, browsable list of everything you truly know.

Tips for getting better at the Icon Quiz

A few small habits make a noticeable difference in how quickly your score climbs. First, pay attention on misses — when you get a question wrong, the correct answer stays highlighted for a moment before the round advances, and that brief exposure is exactly what turns an unknown icon into a known one the next time it comes up. Second, play in short, frequent bursts rather than one long marathon; recognition memory sticks better with spaced repetition than with a single cram session, which is part of why the known-item system spreads your five correct answers across separate encounters rather than requiring them back to back in one sitting. Third, if you're chasing profession XP specifically, remember that only streaks of three or more consecutive correct answers award bonus XP, so it's worth slowing down and being careful rather than clicking quickly and breaking your streak on an avoidable mistake. Finally, switch between Round Mode and Endless Mode depending on how much time you actually have — a rushed Endless Mode session that gets abandoned halfway through banks less useful practice than a clean 10-question round you finish and see through to the results screen.
